Today we’re exploring what scholars have come to call the “Christ Hymn” – one of the oldest recorded pieces of early church poetry and praise. In it, we find that early theology developed around the idea of the self-emptying (kenosis) of God in the person of Jesus Christ, for the sake of service to others. Jesus was obedient to this call of servanthood to the point of death, even death on a cross. Paul reminds the Philippians of this song, and reminds them, too, that it’s not just about Jesus – it’s about them. It’s about us. This is OUR song, too. We are called, in the power of Christ, to empty ourselves for the sake of others, to carry one another’s burdens, to share in the joy and suffering of the gospel. Faith isn’t a solo act – it’s a community affair. Our song is not one of rugged individualism, but of unapologetic interdependence, care, and compassion.
